Exxon Mobil’s third-quarter profit declined compared with last year when the oil giant put up record numbers as oil prices soared, but net income jumped 15% compared with the previous quarter. It also raised its quarterly dividend. Those lofty crude prices have fueled a shopping spree this year as Exxon acquired pipeline operator Denbury, the beneficiary of changes in U.S. climate policy, for $4.9 billion in July, and then a few weeks ago the company said that it would buy Pioneer for $60 billion. Exxon isn’t alone. Earlier this week, Chevron said it would spend more than $50 billion to acquire Hess. Exxon Mobil Corp. earned $9.07 billion, or $2.25 per share in the period. That compares with $19.66 billion, or $4.68 per share, a year earlier.Removing certain items, earnings were $2.27 per share.Analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research predicted higher earnings of $2.36 per share, but Exxon does not adjust its reported results based on one-time events such as asset sales as ...

Even without poutine and ketchup chips, 4 players from Toronto aim to get Miami back to NCAAs

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — There are some serious complaints being aired by a handful of Miami women’s basketball players. For example, finding good poutine in South Florida isn’t easy. Ketchup-flavored potato chips aren’t in most stores. And the inability to start a day with coffee from Tim Hortons is a real problem. These are key issues when almost half of a team’s roster hails from Toronto. For these Hurricanes — Lemyah Hylton, Lashae Dwyer, Shayeann Day-Wilson and Latasha Lattimore — Thanksgiving is in October, the Raptors are the hometown NBA team and what Floridians call “freezing” is nothing more than a pleasant day outside to them.Dwyer, Day-Wilson and Lattimore all hail from Toronto; Hylton is from the suburb of Mississauga, about 15 miles (25 kilometers) west of Toronto. The Hurricanes have only 11 players on the roster this season — and having four from Toronto is basically a happy coincidence.“Honestly, I have no idea how this happened,” Hylton said. “And I think a lot of p...

LONDON — Scotland’s Humza Yousaf laughed off claims from X and Tesla tycoon Elon Musk on Friday that he is a “blatant racist.”Musk — celebrating one year of his controversial stewardship of the platform formerly known as Twitter — attacked the Scottish first minister and SNP leader in response to a video of a Yousaf speech from 2020.“What a blatant racist!” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns. He was replying to an account named “End Wokeness,” which had tweeted out a clip of the old Yousaf speech. In the speech — which Yousaf, then justice secretary, made in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder — he said Scotland has “a problem of structural racism.” He said that in 99 percent of the meetings he attends, he is the only non-white person in the room.He then named several senior positions in the Scottish government and civil society, which he said were all filled by white people.
