Rare eclipse: Asteroid will pass in front of bright star Betelgeuse Monday CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — One of the biggest and brightest stars in the night sky will momentarily vanish as an asteroid passes in front of it to produce a one-of-a-kind eclipse. The rare and fleeting spectacle, late Monday into early Tuesday, should be visible to millions of people along a narrow path stretching from central Asia’s Tajikistan and Armenia, across Turkey, Greece, Italy and Spain, to Miami and the Florida Keys and finally, to parts of Mexico. The star is Betelgeuse, a red supergiant in the constellation Orion. The asteroid is Leona, a slowly rotating, oblong space rock in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.Astronomers hope to learn more about Betelgeuse and Leona through the eclipse, which is expected to last no more than 15 seconds. By observing an eclipse of a much dimmer star by Leona in September, a Spanish-led team recently estimated the asteroid to be about 34 miles wide and 50 miles long (55 kilometers wide and 80 kilometers long). Gophers men’s basketball coach Ben Johnson: ‘I know we are going to win’ One Ben Johnson comment showed how much stake he put into that Nebraska game at Williams Arena on Wednesday.“It was the biggest game in my 2 1/2 years here” as head coach, Johnson said after Minnesota’s 76-65 win over the Cornhuskers. It was a startling remark for so early in the season — but it was the Big Ten opener against a fellow team picked to finish in the bottom of the conference. It was the type of statement a coach is more willing to reveal after a victory — but it didn’t seem to come from a coach feeling the heat from an overall 7-34 Big Ten record.“I say that because the building blocks and the momentum that hopefully this can carry through the rest of this month is so important to this team,” Johnson said.Johnson’s underlying goal is to develop a winning culture, even when losses keep piling up. During a preseason practice, he made a comparison to the standard with the Ohio State football program and has done so recently with Duke men’s basketball. The Gophers (6-3,...

Men’s basketball: Gophers star Dawson Garcia out with an ankle sprain Gophers men’s basketball star forward Dawson Garcia will miss Saturday’s game against Florida Gulf Coast at Williams Arena, head coach Ben Johnson said Friday.Johnson said Garcia has an ankle sprain, not a high-ankle sprain, which would require a longer layoff. “It’s a matter of time and how quickly he can heal,” he said.Garcia injured his left ankle within the opening three minutes of Minnesota’s 76-65 win over Nebraska on Wednesday. He returned to play on both sides of the half, but was subbed out after only two minutes of the second half. The Gophers have four nonconference games before the restart of Big Ten play in early January, which makes this an OK time to be without Garcia. He is the U’s leading scorer (18.2 points per game) and rebounder (7.4) across nine games this season.“If there ever was a time — it has nothing to do with opponent — but there are going to be some days off coming up with Christmas break,” Johnson said. “What I told guys is, ‘Ever...
